Maasai Junior Warriors and Women (1885-1918)

Maasai junior warriors and women

No information accompanies this photo other than it was taken at the time of the German occupation of East Africa as Deutsch Ostafrika (1885-1918). The men are clearly junior warriors (their young age and long hair are clues), so the women may be the mothers and sisters of some of them.

During their stint as junior warriors, the morani lived in encampments not far from their families, and were cooked for by their mothers and sisters.
